Wut’s the catch

The famous "under 1% false positive" figure is doing a lot of work. Turnitin's own chief product officer has said the system deliberately misses up to 15% of AI-written text in order to hold that number down — and Vanderbilt pointed out that 1% of 75,000 papers is still around 750 wrongly accused students a year. Independent research also finds the errors are not evenly spread: detectors misclassify non-native English writing at dramatically higher rates.

Wut it actually claims

Turnitin reports roughly 98% accuracy with a false-positive rate below 1% on documents containing more than 20% AI-written content. Those are the headline numbers, and they are the numbers institutions buy on.

The qualifier does most of the work: "on documents containing more than 20% AI content." That is a narrower claim than "1% of students will be wrongly flagged," which is how it gets read in practice.

The tuning nobody mentions

Turnitin's chief product officer has publicly acknowledged that the detector is deliberately tuned to miss up to 15% of AI-written text in order to keep false positives below 1%.

This is a defensible engineering decision and it deserves credit — given a choice between accusing innocent students and letting some cheating through, they chose the former harm to be the smaller one. It is genuinely the right trade.

But it reframes what the product is. A tool tuned to miss 15% of what it is looking for is not a detector in the sense buyers imagine; it is a conservative screen. And it means a "clean" result carries much less information than an institution assumes.

Who eats the errors

A Stanford-led study found that seven widely used detectors misclassified non-native English writing as AI-generated at an average false-positive rate of 61.3%, against a far lower rate for native writing. That study covered detectors generally rather than Turnitin specifically — but it establishes the mechanism, and the mechanism is not exotic. These systems flag text that is fluent, formulaic and low in variation, which describes both machine output and a careful writer working in a second language.

Elevated false-positive rates have also been identified for neurodivergent students, including autistic, ADHD and dyslexic writers, for much the same reason: writing that follows learned structure closely reads as machine-like to a model.

So the error is not randomly distributed across a student body. It concentrates on international students and disabled students — precisely the groups with the least institutional standing to contest an accusation.

Wut institutions have actually done

Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detection in August 2023, and its reasoning is the clearest statement of the problem: at 1% false positives across roughly 75,000 papers a year, you generate around 750 wrongful accusations annually. The percentage sounds like rounding error; the headcount is a scandal.

Others have followed. Curtin University in Australia disabled AI detection as of January 2026, and institutions including Southern Methodist University and schools in the University of Illinois system have moved away from it, citing accuracy and score transparency. At least one Australian university abandoned it after a substantial share of the misconduct cases it generated were dismissed on investigation.

That last detail is the tell. When the cases a tool generates keep collapsing under scrutiny, the tool is not identifying misconduct — it is generating work.

A small thing we noticed

While collecting primary documents for this decode, Turnitin's own privacy policy and terms pages returned HTTP 403 to our archiver — automated access blocked, even to the legal documents it asks users to agree to. Every other company in this cluster served theirs without complaint.

Minor, and not evidence of anything. But there is something worth noting about a company selling automated judgement of other people's text while declining to let its own terms be read by a machine.

The verdict

A low false-positive rate is not a small number of false accusations; it is a small number multiplied by an enormous volume of papers, landing hardest on students least equipped to argue back. Turnitin says its score is not proof and should start a conversation rather than end one. That is the right instruction, and it is the one institutions most reliably ignore.

Defensible as one signal among several, in the hands of an institution with a real appeals process. Indefensible as the basis of a misconduct finding on its own — and if you are a student being accused on a score alone, the material below is the argument.
